Jalen Hurts — Injured Reserve
Initially diagnosed with a superficial blood clot after being cleated in the left calf in an Oct. 4 loss to the Rams, Hurts had been cleared by doctors to play in Week 5 in the Eagles' loss to the Jaguars in London before more recent testing last week showed that the blood clot had moved. According to a statement released Monday by his agent, Nicole Lynn, Hurts now has been diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis in the left calf, as well as bilateral pulmonary emboli. Hurts has gone on blood thinners to treat the blood clots, and while his prognosis is good and he's not expected to face any long-term health effects, he won't be able to participate in football activities until he's off blood thinners. With that in mind, Hurts isn't expected to make a push for a late-season return from injured reserve and instead will turn his focus toward returning to full health in 2027. The Eagles will move forward with Tanner McKee, Cole Payton and Joe Milton as their options at quarterback.
Eagles QB Jalen Hurts on IR due to blood clot, expected to be out indefinitely
The Eagles have placed Jalen Hurts on injured reserve after consultations with numerous doctors and experts, sources told ESPN and NFL Network.
Jalen Hurts — Injured Reserve
After prior reports indicated that a stint on injured reserve wouldn't be necessary, Hurts will now go on IR after multiple consultations with doctors for the superficial blood clot in his calf. As a result of the transaction, Hurts will be required to miss at least four games, though the quarterback is out indefinitely and isn't a lock to be activated Week 11 when first eligible. Tanner McKee will step in as the Eagles' starting quarterback beginning with Sunday's game against the Panthers, while rookie fifth-round pick Cole Payton will elevate into the backup role.
Sources: Eagles' Jalen Hurts, out indefinitely with blood clot, not planned for IR
The Eagles are not planning to put Jalen Hurts on injured reserve, sources told ESPN, even as he remains sidelined indefinitely with a superficial blood clot.
Jalen Hurts — Out
Hurts was initially diagnosed with a blood clot in his leg prior to the Eagles' Week 5 loss to the Jaguars in London, and a follow-up ultrasound during Week 6 prep showed movement of the blood clot. He's already been ruled out for Sunday's game against the Panthers, and while there's no clear timeline for a return, it looks like an IR stint isn't in the cards for the seventh-year quarterback. Tanner McKee will start under center for Week 6 and for as long as Hurts is sidelined, while rookie fifth-rounder Cole Payton likely serves as the backup.
Jalen Hurts — Out
According to a statement from the team, Hurts requested treatment for his calf following practice Oct. 8, a few days after he had been cleated in the leg during the team's Week 4 loss to the Rams. He underwent an initial ultrasound Saturday following the Eagles' flight to London, with imaging revealing the superficial blood clot. After the results of the ultrasound were reviewed, doctors determined that Hurts could safely play in the Eagles' eventual 19-17 loss to the Jaguars. However, after practicing fully Wednesday to kick off Week 6 prep, the quarterback was sent in for a follow-up ultrasound, which showed movement in the blood clot. As a result, the Eagles have elected to hold Hurts out of action for at least one game, with backup Tanner McKee now primed to start against the Panthers. Since the Eagles are still in the process of determining the appropriate course of treatment for Hurts, his status beyond Week 6 is uncertain at the moment.
Jalen Hurts — Active
It was another sluggish effort from the Eagles' offense, and the only play longer than 19 yards that they managed on the day was a 62-yard TD from Hurts to Darius Cooper in the second quarter. Even so, the QB appeared to engineer a game-winning field goal drive inside the final two minutes of the fourth quarter, only for Jake Elliott to give Ameer Abdullah a returnable kickoff with eight seconds left on the clock which he took back to the Philly 39-yard line -- setting the stage for a game-winning Cam Little field goal. Hurts will take an 8:3 TD:INT and rough 57.8 percent completion rate through five games into a Week 6 meeting with the Panthers.
Jalen Hurts — Active
Hurts threw second-quarter touchdowns of 18 and 10 yards to Darius Cooper, the first of which went off the hands of Rams defender Quentin Lake in the end zone. The Eagles started the game without DeVonta Smith (hamstring) and Dallas Goedert (knee), lost Saquon Barkley (hamstring) in the first quarter and went a franchise-worst 0-for-12 on third down, yet they were still in position to win with a 10-point lead and the ball inside the Rams' 10-yard line halfway through the fourth quarter. Hurts failed on attempts to score with his legs and then his arm as that drive ended in a turnover on downs, and the Rams stormed back with two touchdown drives while the Eagles failed to pick up a first down on their final two drives. Hurts could struggle to produce again in Week 5 against the Jaguars in London if the Eagles remain without some of their key skill players.
Jalen Hurts — Active
Hurts scuffled through the air as much as his final line suggests, averaging a modest 6.1 yards per attempt while taking a pair of sacks. The star signal-caller also absorbed a big hit on the sideline at the end of a two-yard scramble midway through the second quarter, and he missed four plays while undergoing a concussion check he subsequently passed. Hurts led the Eagles to their only points upon checking back in for the following possession, one he capped off with a one-yard touchdown run as time expired in the first half. That would prove to be the highlight of an otherwise forgettable night, and Hurts is averaging an unremarkable 206.7 passing yards per game alongside a 5:3 TD:INT ahead of a Week 4 home showdown against the Rams on Sunday.
